Peni, Stewart enjoy surprise medals at athletics nationals

THE golden double of exciting youngster Rochelle Vidler spearheaded the Ipswich and District Athletic Club’s success at the Australian Junior Championships.

Miriam Peni and Ryan Stewart also impressed, winning medals.

After coming second in her under-17 100m heat (12.49s), Peni was considered an outside chance in the final.  However, she ran the race of her life to finish with a silver medal (12.34).

Peni has been included in a squad of athletes competing at the PNG Pacific Games in Port Moresby, in July.

Peni came to Australia from PNG in October 2012.  She only started athletics in September 2013 with the Ipswich Little Athletics Club before joining the Ipswich & District Athletic Club in October.

She attends Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School.

Stewart is more noted as a field event athlete, especially in discus.

But when asked to compete in the under-14 4x100m relay in Sydney, he made the most of his opportunity.  Stewart shared in Queensland’s bronze medal success, running the second leg of the race.
