Dartmouth cross country coach, Mark Coogan, discusses the direction distance running is going in our country, and he weighs in on how/when an athlete should develop his range vs. perfecting a specific event. He uses Abbey D as an example and mentions that he wants to bring her along as slowly as possible but also makes a conscious effort to push her hard for the time being so that she has the opportunity to make a world team.
Runners often describe themselves or other runnings as “strong.” But what does that mean? To Dartmouth coach, Mark Coogan, it means that a runner can handle a good amount of volume -he/she can put in the miles. He discusses having his athletes do, among other things, threshold runs to develop this strength.
